Blog EntryThe Morning After Hu UApr 28, '08 9:28 AM
for everyone
After sitting as a panelist to Hu U, early Sunday morning our son David together with Wallace Panlillo (husband of Sheryl, the other Hu U panelist)  and Victory Ortigas member  Camille Ocampo took a 10 hour bus ride to  Legaspi in Bicol.  From there they took another hour drive to one of Habitat for Humanity's project.

Picture left shows David and Camille in boots and raincoats.  B
icol can be rainy even in summer.

They were there along with a thousand other volunteers to help build homes for the people of the town.

This is the way I view discipleship.  All too often people
are looking for church to do the work of ministry.  The Bible's idea is completely different.

(bottom left picture: Camille and Wallace)

It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service....

David, Wallace a
nd Camille are not full time ministers.  Neither were they sent by the church to do what they did.  They did it because they are disciples.  The job of the church is to prepare people to have the heart of a disciple it is then the job of the people to do works of service. One reason why so little is accomplished is because people are waiting for churches to move.  What people forget is that the church is not an institution but is them.

Common sense dictates that the best home builders are people who have the experience and know how in making them.  This is Habitat's expertise.  To think that a church will be able to build houses better than Habitat is ludicrous at best.

Churches are called to preach the Gospel.  To turn people's hearts from self-centered living to a life of devotion to God and service of others.  The better they are at this the more people can be empowered to build homes, schools, businesses, hospitals and other works of charity.

The picture on the left is of the recently insatlled board of Habitat Philippines.  In this board are 2 members of Victory Fort and one who regularly attends our services.  Standing third from left is Butch Bautista, a retired CEO who is now Habitat Philippines' Chairman.   David standing extreme right and seated second from right is Margie Moran Floriendo.  Service is not about age or gender but simply a matter of the heart.

This last picture is back at the site in Bicol.  Here's David with local leaders including the town's Mayor (in orange).

Isn't it amazing how many people the church can engage if it did acts of service?

But as the Bible says it all starts with the church's job of preaparing God's people for works of service.  Churches need to be about their Father's business - "Go and Make disciples!"

We believe in the same mission about different ways of building people. Sundays are spiritual building; yet there is always more building support to be done on week-days --- and this is the Exegesis part of each and everyone's Christian life. As our Satan and the children of disobedience bombard and surround Christians and non-Christians alike with their world system and "campaigns", our task is not only to neutralize the effects but to continue spreading and building people based on Christian tenets.

Magna Kultura has many projects, mostly directed at the lower socio-eco class of society --- from theater arts, to music, to art sessions. Currently, we are doing a Pinoy sports clinic that we call Larong Pinoy Play Camp --- reviving the traditional Filipino street games --- targeted at kids 3 to 12 years old --- at the same time among parents & grandparents who know the games and are persuaded to pass on to the new generation of Pinoy Kids. Yet more than teaching kids about the Laro, we also instill the values of play and the character building that sports offer.

Our effort to revive the Pinoy Games among children in poor communities has given them the opportunity to be part of something they never experienced of which their parents could not afford to spend for. We know that that it will give them an experience that will stay on in their memories along with their little kababata's. Yet more than giving individual experiences, we know too that after Magna Kultura leaves the area, the playing of the games will continue to delight children daily and, once more, enliven and bring back the fun in communities. ( The Larong Pinoy Game site at http://luckymelarongpinoy.multiply.com)

Back in the late 80's up to the 90s we spawned all the Milo Summer Sports Clinics. In the 90's we also started the Bear Brand Kite-Flying festivals (which lasted for 15 years till 2006). We perceived that something must be given to the youth --- workshops that build character and wholesome camaraderie. We need healthy and character building workshops that will keep them from being idle (idleness is the devils workshop).

We hope that the Larong Pinoy clinics will not ony revive the games in community but also instill national pride among Filipinos. Personally, I believe that our almighty God is "nationalistic", as perceived in the way He prescribed Israelites to preserved their race and heritage (in Leviticus & Deuteronomy). In a little way, the Larong Pinoy could be a small avenue to start-up kids into loving good things about being a Filipino.

Yes, people can be empowered to build homes, schools, businesses, hospitals and other works of charity --- and doing it in praise of the Lord and those who love Him.

We are like David's mighty men in this age and times. And we know that everything will work together for good.. (a) to them that love God... and, (b) to those called according to His purpose.

God bless you, and more spirit-led power to your ministry, as well as to those who hear the Word in your congregations everywhere.

It was great to see how little it takes to make a difference in other people's lives. Wallace and I have never held shovels before, but together our group was able to dig enough ditches for four houses to be built on. I thought that was really cool!

I'm humbled to have friends like David, Harvard, JB and others who take time out of their busy schedules to serve. It would be great if the rest of us could spare a weekend (or a few hundred pesos) every now and then to help out.
